Welcome Edition #1 · 2017
Johanson and Jackson emerged from the late 90s San Francisco-based skater/surf/graffiti scene, known to many as the Mission School, with portfolios of charged, figurative drawings and immersive three-dimensional environments. Johanson was included in the landmark touring exhibition Beautiful Losers: Contemporary Art and Street Culture (2004–2006). As a husband and wife team, the two collaborate often on projects. Their Welcome Edition is an edition of 75 woodblock printed denim capes and blankets with a sliding scale of special artist details and price ranges. As a one-off from the edition, a series of 50 prints on paper incorporating the same woodblock print as the capes was also produced.
Chris Johanson (b. 1968, San Jose, CA) and Johanna Jackson (b. 1972, Springfield, MA) are Portland-based collaborators who work across painting, sculpture, furniture design, and mixed media. Johanson is a founding member of San Francisco's Mission School movement. Their work explores domestic aesthetics and total living environments, combining functional design with fine art. Collections include SFMOMA and the Hammer Museum. Johanson was included in the 2002 Whitney Biennial and received the 2003 SFMOMA SECA Art Award.
